About Dr. Deranja

Dr. Deranja has an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering, B.S Magna Cum Laude from Syracuse University. He finished a combined MD/PhD program as an NIH-sponsored Medical Science Fellow at State University of New York (SUNY) Stonybrook School of Medicine. He completed Psychiatry residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University where he was Chief Resident and received a Chairman’s Award for Superior Performance in Psychiatry. He was appointed Assistant Professor and Assistant Program Director of the SUNY Upstate Psychiatry Residency Training Program, where he built the program’s Cornerstone Program, an innovative introductory teaching block for incoming psychiatry residents. He also served as Medical Director of Central New York Services Dual Recovery Program. Dr. Deranja completed a fellowship in Dynamic Deconstructive Psychotherapy. He moved to Chicago and was appointed Associate Professor at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. He served as both the Assistant Program Director for the Psychiatry Residency Training Program and the co-director of the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) program. Working with the Department of Anesthesia, Dr. Deranja has extensive experience treating psychiatric comorbidity of pain and is Board Certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine.

Dr. Deranja has clinical expertise in psychotherapy, integrated psychotherapy and psychopharmacology in the treatment of psychiatric illness, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for treatment of Major Depressive Disorder, depression and anxiety, ADHD, and addiction medicine. Dr Deranja carefully takes into consideration all the facets of one’s life experience, including their biological, psychological and behavioral history. He meets his patient where they are at and works together with them over time towards recovery, growth and sustained health.

Continuing his passion of teaching and supervising residents and medical students in psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, Dr. Deranja remains an Affiliate Associate Professor at Loyola.
